The Eternal Knot is one of the Eight Auspicious Symbols. Adopted by Buddhists, it dates back to pre-Buddhist, ancient India.
It symbolizes the perfect union of compassionate activity with penetrative, insightful wisdom. Without this joining of compassion and wisdom, bodhisattvas would not be able to skillfully benefit the myriad number of suffering beings. The Eternal Knot also connotes the transcendence of the limitations of time.
